The Importance of Mahouts to Elephants
At Lanta Elephant Lover by Lanta Elephant Conservation, mahouts are part of each elephant’s daily care. Their experience and close observation help us respond to the individual needs of Prae, Pepsi, Linda and Jan.
Daily care and observation
Mahouts help provide food and water, maintain clean surroundings, and observe each elephant’s appetite, movement and behavior. Small changes can be noticed early and shared with the care team.
Familiarity and trust
A relationship develops through patient, consistent daily routines. An elephant may become familiar with her mahout’s voice, movements and way of working, helping create a calmer environment for care.
Emotional well-being
Elephants have individual personalities and social needs. A calm and attentive mahout respects each elephant’s pace, watches for signs of discomfort and helps avoid unnecessary stress during daily activities.
Health support
Mahouts observe each elephant’s condition every day and report changes in appetite, behavior, movement or visible injuries to the care team. When veterinary care is needed, they share their observations with the veterinarian and assist as directed.
Guiding respectful visits
Mahouts help visitors understand elephant behavior and follow appropriate ways to feed, walk near and observe the elephants. Their guidance supports safer, more respectful interactions for elephants and guests.
More than a caretaker
A responsible mahout is a caregiver, observer and guardian. Daily attention, practical knowledge and cooperation with veterinary professionals support each elephant’s health and quality of life.
