Ethical Elephant Experience in Koh Lanta: What Visitors Should Know

Visiting elephants can be one of the most memorable experiences of a trip to Thailand, but choosing where to visit matters. A responsible elephant experience should place the elephants’ health, comfort and individual needs before entertainment or photographs.

If you are planning an elephant experience in Koh Lanta, this guide explains what to look for, what questions to ask and what you can expect when visiting Lanta Elephant Lover.

What Makes an Elephant Experience Responsible?

Responsible elephant tourism begins with respect. Visitors should be able to learn about each elephant’s history, personality, diet and daily care without seeing riding, performances or activities designed only for entertainment.

Good elephant care also means recognising that every elephant is different. Age, health, previous work and personality can affect how an elephant chooses to move, rest and interact. Activities should therefore remain flexible. Weather conditions and the elephants’ comfort may change what happens during a visit.

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Does the venue offer elephant riding or performances?
  • Can visitors learn about the elephants’ individual backgrounds?
  • Are activities adjusted according to health, behaviour and weather?
  • Is professional veterinary support available when needed?
  • Are prices, program times and inclusions clearly explained before payment?
  • Does the venue provide verifiable welfare or operating certification?

Clear answers help visitors make an informed decision. Be cautious when a venue makes broad claims but provides no information about the elephants, staff, daily care or safety standards.

Elephant Care at Lanta Elephant Lover

Lanta Elephant Lover is a family-run elephant care centre near Klong Jark Waterfall on Koh Lanta. Our family has lived and worked alongside elephants for more than 20 years. As understanding of elephant welfare developed, our approach changed from older tourism practices toward educational visits without elephant riding or performances.

Today, we care for four female elephants: Linda, Pepsi, Prae and Jan. Each has her own history, personality and daily needs. You can meet our elephants and read their individual stories before your visit.

Daily care includes preparing suitable food, maintaining access to clean water and natural surroundings, monitoring behaviour and health, supporting veterinary care and allowing time to rest. Our mahouts observe the elephants every day and become familiar with changes in appetite, movement and behaviour.

GAP-Certified Elephant Camp in Thailand

Our camp is certified under Thailand’s Good Agricultural Practices for Elephant Camps by the Department of Livestock Development. The certification number is 02-6413-81-530-080005 and is valid until 1 July 2028.

The GAP framework supports standards covering elephant management, animal health, staff practices, visitor safety and the camp environment. Certification is a foundation rather than the end of the journey, so our team continues to review and improve daily care. Read more about our approach to responsible elephant care.

What Happens During an Elephant Visit?

During our elephant programs, an experienced guide introduces the elephants and explains their backgrounds, diet, behaviour and care. Guests may prepare and offer food, walk alongside the elephants and observe their individual personalities in a peaceful natural setting.

We do not offer elephant riding or performances. Activities involving water are never guaranteed and depend on the elephant’s comfort, health and conditions on the day. This flexibility is important because responsible care should not force an elephant to follow a fixed entertainment schedule.
