Visitors sometimes ask whether our elephants are chained. We believe this question deserves a clear and honest answer. At Lanta Elephant Lover by Lanta Elephant Conservation, our elephants are tethered only at night using a 30-metre-long chain within a designated resting area.
Why night-time management is necessary
Koh Lanta includes farms, homes, roads and community land close to natural areas. An elephant searching for food at night can enter agricultural land, damage crops or property and encounter vehicles, unsuitable food or other hazards. Responsible care therefore has to consider both elephant welfare and community safety.
The 30-metre length allows each elephant to move within the designated area, reach prepared food and drinking water and choose a comfortable resting position. Tethering is not used as a visitor attraction and it is not part of daytime activities.
Observation is part of the routine
Our mahouts observe behaviour, appetite, movement and general condition every day. Changes are recorded and relevant information is shared with veterinary professionals for assessment and advice whenever necessary. The resting area, food, water and the elephant’s condition must be considered together rather than treating any single practice in isolation.
A balance between welfare and local responsibility
Elephant care does not happen separately from the surrounding community. Protecting neighbouring farms and respecting local land reduces conflict and helps keep elephants away from avoidable danger. Our approach is based on transparency, consistent monitoring and practical risk management.
We do not claim that one method suits every elephant camp. We explain the practice we use, why we use it and how it is monitored. Guests are welcome to ask our team questions before or during their visit.
